Things I Never Knew About Ballroom Dancing

There are many things in life we don’t know. Unanswered questions, untested theories, and a variety of other unknowns. Same applies to dancing. And just like you, a lot of people – I’d estimate more than 99 percent of the population – don’t know what goes into the ballroom dancing experience. To answer some of your questions, here is a list of seven things current students never knew until they started dancing.

  1. “I thought ballroom dance was snooty, just Foxtrot, Waltz, and such. Turns out it also includes Salsa, Cha Cha, and other hip dances.” – E. Andrews
  2. “That I could do this, or really anything requiring rhythm [her husband is nodding as she says this]. And that you don’t need to feel coordinated to be able to excel, because you learn from the ground up.” –T. Wort
  3. “How many dances there are for you to choose from. When people ask me what my favorite dance is, I always say, ‘the one I’m doing right now!’” – S. Dills
  4. “It’s lots of exercise and really sculpts the body!” – J. Cearley
  5. “The slower dances [such as Foxtrot and Waltz] are more strenuous. Having to hold back, to control your body, is much more of a workout.” – B. Simeona
  6. “How much communication there is between the leader and the follower. Seemingly insignificant body shifts can communicate a great deal if you know how to listen.” –R. Sullivan
  7. “There are so many layers to one dance. No matter what level you’re at, there’s always something to focus on.” – T. Denall

Do you have questions or concerns of your own? Let me know what they are, because I’d love to help some of your concerns to rest. But no matter what, come in and discover for yourself something unknown about ballroom dance!
